Does a digital converter box improve and/or add channels to local broadcast TV?
I have friends that are ditching their cable service for the free digital service since they say their picture improved and they are getting channels they never had before. I’m skeptical, is this happening to alot of people?
Digital over the air broadcasting (in most cases) provides a better picture than analog over the air TV.

You may get more channels. A broadcast TV station can broadcast up to 5 TV channels in digital form in the space that now used for one channel in analog.
Almost all TV stations are now broadcasting in digital. They must STOP analog broadcasting in Feb. 2009. So there is NO reason not to get a digital TV converter box and try it out.
NOTE: the converter box is only a tuner it takes the digital signal and converts it back to analog for the TV to use.
Cable TV receives almost all there channels in digital form and converts some of them back to analog before putting them on the cable system because most TVs don’t have a digital tuner in them. You will ALWAYS get more channels with cable than with a TV antenna. The cable system provides (for a fee) a converter box to get the digital channels on the cable system.

Can I use a digital DVD recorder/VCR with a tuner as a converter box for an analog TV?
I have an decent analog TV and we need to get a DVDR/VCR combo for it. I was thinking, “Hey, why couldn’t we use the DVD/VCR as a converter box to digital TV format instead of buying a converter?” We are thinking of the Philips DVDR3545/37. Is this possible?
I looked up the specs on that unit and it does have an ATSC (over the air) digital tuner, so yes, you can use that as a converter.’
But, you won’t be able to record one channel while watching another, if you want to do that you’ll still need a converter.
I would suggest though, if your TV has video/audio inputs (the yellow and black/red jacks) that you connect via that instead of RF for better quality.
